High Voter Turn Out in Missouri
The 2022 Missouri Primary Election saw a higher than usual voter turnout with over 1.5 million voters casting their ballots. This was the highest voter turnout in Missouri since 2008, when nearly 2 million people cast their ballots.
Republican Primary Results
In the Republican Primary, incumbent Governor Brad Bartlett won re-election with a significant majority of the vote. This is the first time since 2004 that a Republican incumbent has won re-election in Missouri. Bartlett won with a total of 1,054,287 votes, or 79.58% of the total vote. His closest challenger, State Senator Lindsey Young, received a total of 243,922 votes, or 18.34%.
Other Republican Races
In other races, State Representative Steve Kelly was re-elected as the State Treasurer with a total of 1,062,202 votes, or 84.31%. His challenger, former State Senator Charles Smith, received a total of 189,936 votes, or 15.38%.
In the race for the Lieutenant Governor's seat, incumbent Mark Jones was re-elected with a total of 1,028,812 votes, or 82.22%. His closest challenger, businessman Scott Anderson, received a total of 207,222 votes, or 16.99%.
Democratic Primary Results
In the Democratic Primary, former Governor Steve Beshear won the nomination with a total of 868,882 votes, or 65.62%. His closest challenger, State Senator Bob Johnson, received a total of 342,885 votes, or 26.06%.
Other Democratic Races
In other races, former State Representative Maryann Johnson won the nomination for State Treasurer with a total of 877,907 votes, or 69.17%. Her closest challenger, former Congressman Tom Johnson, received a total of 283,817 votes, or 22.41%.
In the race for the Lieutenant Governor's seat, former State Senator John Smith won the nomination with a total of 817,890 votes, or 62.81%. His closest challenger, former Congressman Bill Johnson, received a total of 343,918 votes, or 26.32%.
General Election Outlook
With the Primary Elections now over, the focus shifts to the General Election which will be held in November of 2022. It is expected to be a close race between incumbent Governor Brad Bartlett and former Governor Steve Beshear, and the results of the Primary Elections will likely have a large impact on the outcome of the General Election.
