The Year of the Quarterback
The 2022 NFL Draft was a memorable one. With the first overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected University of Houston Quarterback, Travis Johnston. Johnston, who was the consensus number one pick since the beginning of the college football season, is the first quarterback to be taken in the first overall spot since 2015. With the second overall pick, the New York Jets selected Offensive Tackle, Jaxon Hiles from the University of Texas.
The Early Rounds
The early rounds of the draft were dominated by offensive players. In the first round, seven of the first ten picks were either quarterbacks, wide receivers, or offensive linemen. The most notable selections were the Denver Broncos selecting Linebacker, Chase Davis from the University of Georgia in the twenty-fourth spot and the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Cornerback, Malik Williams from Clemson in the twenty-eighth spot.
The Later Rounds
The later rounds focused more on special teams and depth. In the fifth round, seven of the first ten picks were either kickers, punters, or long snappers. The most notable selections were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selecting Punter, Ethan King from the University of Alabama in the one hundred and sixty-fourth spot and the Washington Redskins selecting Kicker, Trevor Parker from LSU in the one hundred and seventy-fourth spot.
The Final Result
At the conclusion of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars had the most selections with nine, followed closely by the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams with eight each. The teams that had the most defensive selections were the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs with three each. Overall, the 2022 NFL Draft was a success and it will be remembered as the year of the quarterback.
